My husband and I enjoy taking in an auction every once in a while. In fact, we've been to a few over the last several weeks. It's fun to discover something buried deep in a box and snap it up for a few bucks - with a bunch of other stuff your really don't need! Even more fun is when you can learn the story behind many of the treasures up for sale. Our nephew's ball team was doing concessions for an auction in Rossville Sunday, so we thought we'd go check it out. Turn out, it was the family of Highland Park basketball coach Ken Darting. We had a nice time catching up with him - and bidding! Our purchases? My husband was the big winner with a rototiller - and coach had a good time telling him the ins and outs of how it works and how much he'll enjoy it. (Yes, we got it home and my husband immediately fired it up and took it for a spin around the garden!) My sister-in-law came away with an old sewing machine. The treasurers inside its drawers were the neatest part - coach's mom had handwritten notes about the machine's particular quirks and samples of different stitches she'd tried and hints on the best settings to achieve perfection. They'd tried to buy her a new machine, coach told us, but she'd have none of it - she loved that old one! Coach went on to tell us how mom and her sisters lived for sewing and quilting and what beautiful creations they turned out. I'm sure my sister-in-law will think of that love when she uses the machine now. The final item of the day were two old metal outdoor chairs, which I bought. Coach told me how his parents would sit on those chairs on their front porch over the years. It made me wonder if my husband and I will be sitting on our front porch in those very same chairs years from now. Maybe so - we unloaded them from the truck and sat in our driveway on them Sunday night! Sometimes it's more than just the item you buy - it's the story that comes along with it...no charge!

Posted by: Chelsey No wonder you and I get along! :) You still need to come out to Paxico ya know! You like antiques too, right? What do you like to look for?

RESPONSE: It's been a while since we've been out to Paxico, you're right. Goodness - what don't we look for?! My husband says there's no room for any more dishes in our house, since I collect like four kinds! He collects old microphones. There are lots of other little things around our house, too. I try to exercise self-control, but sometimes, when they're looking for someone to just bid a dollar....well...I can't help it!
