SSG 10k Training Log: On the Surface

The latest on preparations for my first 10k run in the Sunflower State Games

It happens every spring - after months of mostly treadmill runs because I don't like the cold or ice or snow, I head outdoors and feel totally out of shape! I was thinking about that this weekend when I put in a six and a half mile run on the hilly dirt roads around my father-in-law's house (not quite the seven miles I was striving for, but I tuckered myself out). I'm pretty confident in being able to make the 10k distance, but I am a bit concerned that most of my long runs have been on dirt surfaces, not concrete or pavement. I asked my friend Tony Estes of Fitness in Training about that (check out his site -  http://www.get-fit.org/). He says different surfaces do challenge your body differently, so I should try to gradually work in longer distances on a surface like that of the race, ie concrete or pavement. That said, the softer surface of the dirt trails is easier on the joints, so it's okay that I'm taking those routes so often! The path around Lake Shawnee or the Shunga Trail would both be good options to prep for the race. By the way, if you don't feel like running, but want to support the Sunflower State Games, Jersey Mike's is donating 20% of its sales today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday) to SSG - just present the coupon which you can find on our home page. See you at the games!
