Wild Life

Spring is always a fun time around the yard, waiting to see who will show up. Our little wild kingdom always seems to have a raccoon, fox, snake, turtle, turkey or wood chuck saying hello. Last week, we brought the three outside dogs into the garage for the night because of the storm threat. When my husband took them back out in the morning, Ricky and Lucy about pulled him back to the woods because two deer were up eating breakfast - I guess they knew the dogs weren't around to bark at them that morning! Over the weekend, the dogs wouldn't leave a certain hollowed-out tree alone. My husband took a look inside and found a momma possum had taken up residence! He later saw a couple sets of pointy ears poking out of her pouch, but they're a bit camera-shy right now!

Posted by: Anonymous Melissa, I have a friend that does wild life rehab. She told me to make sure if an opossum is killed to check her pouch for her babies, they can survive if taken care of. Just thought you might want to know.

RESPONSE: Doug and I were talking about that very thing - how he's seen possums get hit and the babies survive in the pouch.

Posted by: Suzy Our "guest" was a possum.

RESPONSE: Glad to hear no one got "skunked!"

Melissa, we had our own "guest" living under our porch this past week. I hated having to do it, but we got a "humane" trap from the game warden, so we could get her back out in the country, where she belongs. I'd have left her alone (she wasn't hurting anything), but I have an in home daycare, so had to get her out, for safety's sake. Poor thing was terrified.

RESPONSE: What kind of guest? Hopefully not a smelly one :o)

Be careful Momma Possum can be very mean. She will want to protect her young. The dogs will need to watch themselves around her. The pictures are good. Possums will eat about anything. Yuck.

RESPONSE: Doug put a temporary fence around the tree so the dogs can't get at it - making sure the fencing has big enough openings that she can get through if she wants to move. Of course, that means we must check to be sure she's not on the move before we let the dogs out, or she'd be a sitting duck (or possum, I guess!).
