Ralph and I on the Event Circuit

We weren't walking red carpets like the Oscars, but Ralph and I did have the opportunity to highlight some award winners Monday. We hosted the first-ever Topeka Lodging Association Awards. The TLA launched the event to recognize those unsung heroes of the hotel and motel industry in Topeka - the people who clean the rooms and handle those calls at the front desk among other duties. It was really neat to be a part of honoring this group of workers who are so vital to "selling" Topeka to visitors. Not to mention, they're usually the people getting ready to welcome luncheon attendees, and Monday, they got an invitation to lunch themselves. We hope the TLA makes this an annual event to let them know they're appreciated. Ralph and I also spent Saturday evening together, hosting the America Heart Association's annual Heart Gala. It's a fun event that raises money to promote awareness of and research into heart disease. A highlight of the evening was hearing from J.J. Lutz and his family. He's the Seaman High School student who collapsed of a previously unknown heart defect last school year and was saved, in part, by the Automatic External Defibrillator at the school. It's always impressive to see living proof of the difference the money raised can make. It's all capped off a busy several days for Ralph and I - he also introduced the Shrine Circus Saturday evening (before heading to the Heart Gala) and I spoke to the Association of Federal Retired Employees Friday. I get to have even more fun Friday - it's Dr. Seuss Reading Day at McEachron Elementary - can't wait!
