A New Accessory Today

Quick story about a new accessory I'm sporting today - it's a pin shaped like a red purse, and the clasp is a heart. Ralph and I are hosting the American Heart Association's annual gala this weekend. We had a meeting with Kim from AHA today and she thought perhaps I might like to have a "red purse" to go along with the "red dress" I have! It's part of the Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign. While many people picture men having heart attacks and dying from coronary events, they may need to be reminded that heart disease is also the number one killer of women. The red dress - and red purse - remind women to take the matter to heart. Ralph and I enjoy the Heart Gala because it not only raises money to advance research and treatments for heart disease in adults, it also focuses on heart disease in children - you might be able to blame much of the heart disease in adults on bad food and lack of exercise, but babies and children are innocent victims. It's especially important to me since I have a six-year old nephew who underwent heart surgery before his first birthday. Each year, the Heart Gala is proud to host a "heart child." This year is a young man whose story we've shared here on 13 News - JJ Lutz, a Seaman High School student who suffered a cardiac event at school and was saved by an automatic external defibrillator. Saturday night, we'll celebrate JJ and the efforts that saved his life, and we'll raise awareness of all that can still be done to keep our hearts healthy. But the red dresses and red purses remind us it's an effort that continues every day of the year.
