It's always an exciting day when the Kansas State Treasurer's Unclaimed Property Division takes over our studio! How big of a task is it for them to take the show on the road? Well, staff gets here by noon to work with our engineers on hooking computers and phone lines and headsets. They test connections, make sure all is well with the world. A few glitches aren't uncommon, but today they encountered a big one - the state's computer network went down, threatening to postpone our plans! Luckily, all is back up and running, and they're looking forward to see if the state has any unclaimed property that belongs to you! That's what this is all about - getting unclaimed property back to its rightful owners. There are millions of properties worth millions of dollars. It can be unrefunded deposits, an inheritance you didn't know about, old stock certificates, bank deposit box contents, and the list goes on. The Unclaimed Property Division does work to find people - cross-checking different databases and such - but it's not as easy as it may sound. That's why they periodically step out of the office and do media events such as this. It's been more than ten years since WIBW-TV first staged a "Kansas Cash Connection" event with then-treasurer Sally Thompson, and we've continued through Tim Shallenburger and now Lynn Jenkins. Over the years, people who've called have found claims from $5 to $10 - we've even had some topping $25,000! Wouldn't that be a nice little surprise? You do want to check back often, because they get new items all the time - financial institutions are required to turn over unclaimed properties each year. Hope you have a chance to call the special number Tuesday night - 1-866-817-1313.
