Thank you, Manhattan - and the lady with the change!

We had a busy day at 13 News Wednesday. We partnered with the Beach Museum of Art at K-State to host a Manhattan Chamber of Commerce business after-hours event. Candice, Ralph, JB and I loaded up around 2 pm, scripts in hand, and hit the road! Our production crews were two hours ahead of us, and lots of other people followed about an hour later. Everyone was so gracious and helpful - a big thanks to Martha and Lorne and the rest of the museum staff and volunteers. Also, Ruth Ann Wefald, who came over to visit with us on-air about why she was so passionate about leading the effort that led to the museum's opening in 1996. If you haven't had a chance to check out the Beach, take the opportunity - a very cool, diverse collection. My favorite new friend - 4-year old Jobeth (her picture's on the homepage), who's been attending Chamber events with her parents since she was just a few weeks old! But before I even got to that fun in Manhattan, I had to run a quick errand in downtown Topeka on my way in to work. The free spots on Kansas Avenue were full, so I pulled on to a side street, which was metered. As I made my way to the sidewalk, digging in my purse, a nice woman stopped to say hello and tell me she reads our blogs. While we chatted, I discovered the only change I had were pennies - parking meters don't take pennies and an officer on one of those spiffy new Segways was just around the corner checking vehicles, so I knew I couldn't take a chance on leaving the meter empty! So, a bit embarrassed, I asked if she had change for a dollar. Thanks goodness, she did! Our chance encounter was a blessing - and I thank her very much for saving the day!
