Is anyone else having a hard time even comprehending the amount of cash flowing through political campaigns these day? Hillary Clinton raised eyebrows Wednesday with the news she loaned her campaign $5 million of her own money. But no problem - today we learn she's raised $4 million since midnight Tuesday. Not bad for a day's work - until you hear how her opponent, Barack Obama, did. His campaign has raked in $7.2 million since Tuesday evening, and took in $32 million for the month of January. Where does all that money go? I know many people say it's the industry I'm in - television. Candidates must spend tons of cash on TV ads if they want to be competitive. $4 million is an awful lot of 30-second spots. Of course, maybe I'm skeptical because Topeka hasn't exactly been a hotspot in Presidential campaigns lately. That could change this week - we saw our first ad ahead of the GOP caucuses hit our airwaves yesterday - from Ron Paul. Still, the amount of money it takes to seek public office is staggering. I wonder how many good potential candidates it keeps from even considering a run.
