Inside Helping Hands

I'm running a bit out of sorts this week, but it's in a good way. I'm working on a project (with the assistance of Ralph and Lindsay) to highlight Helping Hands Humane Society. At 7 pm Monday, we'll be airing a half-hour special taking a close look at what this organization means to our community and why it needs your help. Perhaps you've heard Helping Hands is raising money to build a new shelter and wonder why they want a fancy new building just to house a bunch of dogs and cats. I've had a chance to talk to many people and really take a look at the current shelter and can tell you it's more than that. Our special will show you the problems the current facility has and let you know just how close it's come to being shut down. Imagine that happening - the shelter takes in 10,000 animals a year. If it closed, where would they go? To your yard, your alley, your street. I was telling a woman from Jefferson County about this yesterday and she said we don't realize how lucky we are to have Helping Hands. Yes, Jefferson County has a shelter, but when it's full, it's full. Helping Hands won't turn any animal away. That brings with it it's own heartbreak - we'll explain that and how the new shelter will help in our special. I'll post some video excerpts as I start putting things together. Meantime, remember 7 pm Monday, January 21st. Then really remember Saturday, January 26th. From 2 to 5 pm that day, we'll be hosting a live telethon, asking your support for the new shelter.  Watch and you'll see why the help is so desperately needed.
