Has someone ever stolen that parking spot in front of you? Have you ever been caught behind someone in line at the grocery store that has 25 items instead of the 20 mandated for the speedy checkout? I think it is safe to say, we've all witnessed a dose of rudeness. The question is, how often are you rude to others? BE HONEST! And ask yourself how many of these questions to which you answer yes! A recent Oprah audience took the same test and one of these stood out with almost 100% of the audience admitting to committing this rude act.

Are you late often?

Have you ever typed an email while on the phone?

Have you ever answered a non-urgent phone call while having a face-to-face conversation?

Have you ever taken more than the allowed number of items through the speedy checkout at the grocery store?

Have you ever taken a parking spot that you knew someone else was waiting for longer than you?

Have you ever let your dog go in your neighbor's yard?

Have you ever gossiped?

ALL OF THESE ARE  EXAMPLES OF RUDE BEHAVIOR!!!!!!!!!!!11

OK - Here was the number one offense for the Oprah audience... GOSSIP! 97% of the audience 'fessed up that they do this. When looking for those three innocent people in the audience that hadn't, one of them finally stood up and said...."I have gossiped but my mother pushed no on accident"......so apparently it was really 98%!!!!!

So now it's time for me to fess up................

YES-I am late often - I try not to be! I'm just always trying to do more than I have time to. Bad, I know..and its RUDE!

YES-I admit, I have typed an email while on the phone - another politeness casualty of multi-tasking.

NO-I do draw the line at answering the cell phone while talking. I may apologize and check to see who it is but if it can wait, I always finish my face to face conversation first.

NO-I'm the girl counting every item in my cart just to make sure I don't go over the speedy checkout limit. I do admit, its not necessarily out of the goodness of my heart, but the fear of being embarrassed if someone calls me out on it!

NO-I never take a parking spot away from someone waiting for it first - especially if they follow etiquette and put on their blinker. I mostly follow this rule because of how mad I got when someone did it to me!

YES - Ruby has "gone" in the neighbor's yard at home but it was an accident! She wandered over the property line on her leash and I wasn't paying attention. Here in Topeka, it never happens because I live in an apartment and I have to clean up after my pup EVERY TIME! :)

YES - GOSSIP!!! I can't lie and say I've never gossiped. It's an ugly tendency of human nature. I try very hard to remember I wouldn't want someone talking about me. :)

SOOOOOOO.....How do you fare? What's you're weakness on this list? So many of mine come from multi-tasking and I think that happens to a lot of us. Is our society too busy to be polite or is that just a sorry excuse? I think we could all benefit from being a little more considerate of others.

Posted by: The early bird and the worm I would just like to say that it IS rude to be excessively early (15 minutes or more) when you have a personal appt. with someone. They have a job to do and coming that early interrupts their work and other appts. I'm not a doctor or a dentist--those people have "screens" in place so they are not interrupted by early birds. But I have had to drop everything I was doing for people I had an appt. with who were 15,20, even 30 minutes early. It's as frustrating if not more frustrating that people who are late.----------- I know what you mean, if you have a packed schedule then its easy to get frazzled when someone shows up early. As long as the people that do show up early don't act upset that I'm not quite ready to give them my full attention, then it doesn't bother me too much. But if people start tapping their foot impatiently when they came early, I find that a little frustrating! :) LS

Posted by: Ms. RUDENESS I have: (1) asked people their age (even when I knew it was wrong); (2) I have asked people about their living situation; and (3) I have asked people why they are not married; (4) I have asked people about their hair (if it was their hair or a piece); and (5) I have asked people whether they have ever been married before. I am the Queen of Rudeness but my therapist has helped me realize that it's only because I am miserable in my own life. He's right. Now, I wonder how I can apologize to the MANY people I've turned off. No one wants to deal with me. HELP! ---- Hi!!! First of all, we're all guilty of a little bit of rudeness, it's part of our human nature that the tongue is inherently evil and has to be conciously tamed at all times. So don't feel alone at all! AND more importantly it is NEVER too late to start being a friendlier person! :) One smile and one affirmation can change someone's whole day!!! Thanks for writing and good luck! LS

Posted by: DGM I've had the checkout clerks motion to me to come to them, when I know have too many items, if they are otherwise not busy. I guess there's a benefit to shopping at 11pm. :) ----------Ha, now THAT is in no way rude, love it. :) LS

No I hate being late. No I do not type an e-mail while on the phone. No I do not answer my cell when talking to someone face to face, I might check to see if it is urgent but that is it. No I don't do speedy checkout very often but I always make sure I don't have too many items when I do. No on the parking spot. Yes, I have gossiped who doesn't? Even the guys here at work gossip. :)------ Ha it is definitely the hardest one to keep from doing. And lets be honest--- sometimes the guys are the WORST gossipers :) LS

Lindsay, I finally get to verbalize my frustration regarding what I perceive to be rude at the grocery store - that is when checking out, the checker is pushing the bag of groceries at me while my hands are busy putting my change in my billfold. I have only two hands! Sometimes I ask them to politely set the bag down til I'm able to pick it up!!! This happen often at drive ins as well.

Posted by: rs Are you late often? Never. I absolutely hate being late and am disgusted by people that are habitually late. Have you ever typed an email while on the phone? Never. Have you ever answered a non-urgent phone call while having a face-to-face conversation? Don't carry a cellphone and find their public use extremely rude and rediculous. Have you ever taken more than the allowed number of items through the speedy checkout at the grocery store? No. Have you ever taken a parking spot that you knew someone else was waiting for longer than you? No, and will confront those that do it to me. Have you ever let your dog go in your neighbor's yard? No, my dog doesn't leave our yard and neither should yours. Have you ever gossiped? Yes, it's human nature to try to draw attention away from yourself at someone else's expense. ___--------------- Well, I'd say you fared pretty well, RS! We could all learn from ya! Thanks for writing :) LS

I won't say that I am rude but, don't even think about taking my parking spot, get in the way to the limited check out, talk on the cell phone while I am telling you a good gossip about whom ever....

Which is worse, being late or being excessively early? I am the latter... i never answer my phone--EVER. And never type e-mail while on the phone... i, too, count my items in the cart, and never take a parking spot (BUT, i get furious at people who PARK behind others and wait... and wait... and wait for them to leave... I have sat in my car before and then got out like I forgot something in the store, when someone has stopped up traffic while i unload my cart and return it to the cart corral...) don't have a dog to let go in a neighbors yard (even though I find that really funny)... and, i refuse to gossip (it is something that i find disruptive to others)... but there was this guy at the store who stole some old ladies parking spot, went in, bought 13 items, went through the ten item line, answered a call while talking to the cashier, then texted a gossip note to a friend about a dog making doo in his neighbors yard... :) -------------------- Ha, thanks KM. I know what you mean about parking behind people. But, I admit - I've been the anxious parker! Oh NO! ;) LS
