After visiting the sight of the JKF assasination, so many of you told me exactly where you were and what you were doing. For an entire generation, it was a moment burned in their memories. I know for so many of us, 9-11 is much the same. It's hard to believe it's already been seven years since 9-11 happened because my memories are so vivid. I was a senior in high school, writing our high school's television broadcast when the first building was hit. For me, on that day more than ever, the world of 24-hour news came into fruition. Our broadcast was a short time later, so my co-anchor and I at that time, broke the news to the nearly 1500 people of my highschool over our closed-circuit televisions. In almost all of our classes that day, both teachers and students were glued to the television. I remember watching that second plane hit the World Trade Center and being in absolute disbelief. Even now, when I see that clip, it doesn't look real. It truly looks like a hoax. One teacher late in the day walked to the front of the class, turned off the television and simply said "Ok, that's enough." I also remember a surge in patriotism in the weeks and months after. A reminder that sometimes it takes devastating tragedy to bring us back together. What were you doing the morning of September 11, 2001? |

I was staying the night over at a friends house. I woke up the next day to turn on my soap operas, (yes I watch them) and saw what was going on. I was glued to the tv the rest of the day. Later on that day, I had to leave the house and saw all of the chaos. I was living in Lawrence at the time and the roads were packed. But, I'll never forget what happened that day. I lost my best friend in the attacks. She just got married and had just found out she was pregnant with her first child. God Bless all of those who had lost their lives and those who lost loved ones. You will never be forgotten. Posted by: travis Location: ozawkie i was a senior in high school one of my friends just ran into class out of the blue and told us to turn on the t.v. horrable when the fell and all those firefighters were in there trapped. i lost a real good friend that day he was a firefighter for the nyfd.-------- So sorry for your loss, Travis. LS Posted by: R Location: Topeka I was a work at the VA. My co-worker said "One of the Twin Towers was just hit by a plane, then we heard about the second one. We were both just so scared & ill to out stomaches. I remember the hospital being so quiet that day. We were really busy, but know one was talking! I WILL NEVER FORGET!!! Posted by: Mark Location: Waverly I remember all to well-I was living in Albuquerque, New Mexico-asleep still cause I worked a double the evening/morning-my mom called me and told me to turn on the T.V when I asked why-she told me this (and I will never forget it) "We are being attacked" (key word "We") that day and that phone call has changed me more then what happen in Dallas-I sat in horror and disbelief-asking myself why this was happening and coming to a realization that we were not as safe as we thought we were-when I had calmed down and started to think about all the innocent lives that ended that day-I made sure that everyone that I love knew that I loved them, We as a nation must continue to heal from this attack-time to stop hating and start loving again-because what happen that day was a result of hate-it is time to let go of that hate, it is time to forgive, but never forget the innocence that was lost that day-Let Go-Let God !!! Posted by: Jackie Tweed Location: Manhattan I was at work at K-State. I called my husband to tell him that a plane had hit and he seemed to not be paying attention to what I said Hhe was listening to the Today Show and was listening to them more than me) they had already speculated that it was a Terrorist Attack. Being 61 years of age I have seen many things, but this attack really put a knot in my stomach and everyday life has never been the same. You can't go to the airport and think of getting on the plane as before. Some items that we thought nothing about carrying in our purses (lip gloss, lotion) are no-no's now. It's really unfortunate that our lives have really changed forever. I too remember the surge in Church going and Patriotism in the days that followed 9/11. Posted by: David Location: topeka I was working, they had the radio on just like they didevery day when the first news came out, the Dj's made light of it, but when it was announced that something terrible had happened they appoligized. As more details came over they switched to a station that was more known for not just music but a little of both (music & News) We were then allowed to hear and talk about this tragedy, but were told to aty least do enough work so the quota was met, It wasnt tilnoon that we all saw pictures and stood in shock. Posted by: susan Location: Kansas teaching elementary school that morning--spent alot of the day trying to be "normal" for the kids and supportative for the adults. It was a Tuesday--that meant High School Volleyball that night at Rock Creek. I remember the long drive there and every radio station was overwhelemed w/ information. As I drove there I cried most of the way--everything was so mixed up. At the game, everything went on as scheduled. For that time in the gym, the threat seemed to disappear. I remember that Rock Creek staff did a great job of keeping all running smoothly and keeping the girls focused. Posted by: Linda Location: Topeka I remember that on my drive in I didn't turn on the radio which is almost always a daily thing. When I got to work there were people leaving and my co-worker that had just returned to work after being on materinty leave was abosultely histerical. I didn't have a clue to why everyone was upset. Looking back that was probably a good thing. I was the calm in the storm on my floor of the buildig I work in. Looking back. That was the most patriotic day this nation has probably seen since the end of the Civil War. Many things have changed but many more need to be changed to keep the USA safe. Take a moment to pray for the soldiers in all branches of service and all our police, firefighters and emt's here in our country that are a privledge to us because they help keep us safer than we might otherwise be.----------- Here, here, Linda. LS Posted by: Lori Location: Topeka On 9/11 I was at work trying to contact my husband. He was @ a conference in Georgetown (which is across the river from the pentagon) when he heard & seen the plane crash into the pentagon. He immediately booked a spot on the train to get home. What a relief to hear his voice when he called to say he is okay!-------- That must have been so frightening! Glad he was safe :) LS Posted by: Patty I was on my way to work. (Telemarketing) & heard on the radio something was going on. At that time we were selling books to business all over but mainly NYC. 1 hr after I got to work we closed and went home & was closed for 2 days after that. I spent that whole day in front of the TV with my kids. ----------- I've never been more glued to the TV for so long. LS Posted by: Tresa Location: Berryton I am a school bus driver for USD450 and was unloading elementary children and Berryton elementary. When the sounds came over the stereo in my bus.------------- How scary, being in charge of so many kids at that time! How did you handle that? LS Posted by: Annette Location: Emporia I was working at the Anderson County Hospital, and we all went into a empty patient room and watched it. the drive to Waverly was weird, no planes in the air that afternoon or for a long time afterwords. The kids had a lot of questions when they came home from school.------------ I had forgotten that too, I lived about five minutes from an airport and not seeing any planes in the air for so long was definitely eerie. LS Posted by: Bri Location: Emporia I was in 6th grade and my teacher came running into our class yelling, "A plane just hit the World Trade Center and it's on fire!" The entire middle school walked down the street to this place that has a big screen tv and we watched the news for the entire day. -- And I just happen to be sitting in my dorm under a bomb threat the night before the 7th anniversary of 9/11. It's just a little bit scary...---------------Yep, so many of us were glued to our televisions. What I still can't get over is the image of that second plane, hitting right when so many of us were already watching our televisions from the first hit. It was horribly surreal. LS Posted by: Matt Location: MArysville sorry, forgot to put my name and town, that was me in the last comment Posted by: Darrin Rowley Location: Eskridge KS well i think i was sitting in school that day.. an I heard about it. from one of the teachers.. an then we started to watch it on tv. an then i got a feeling about somthing becuase my Uncle works in New York like a couple blocks down from those towers an him an his boss an couple of other coworkers went to stand up on there Roof of there building.. that was the most awful thing that could ever happen that day... Posted by: Anonymous Fire drill, kindergarten, i remember the P.A. coming on and shouting" A PLANE HAS CRASHED INTO THE TWIN TOWERS A PLANE HAS CRASHED INTO THE TWIN TOWERS!" of course i didnt know what the twin towers were so i didnt care until i realized when one of my classmates dads went into war. remembered it ever since. i think it was a coincidence that they chose the day 9-11. ------------ It was definitely an eerie date to choose. LS Posted by: jimmy Location: topeka i was running the cash register at walgreens when the bookkepper ran out saying we had been attacked. i knew right away bin laden was responsible while most other americans had never even heard of him.----------- It was certainly surprising afterwards to realize just how much he had already gained infamy and been in the news before the attacks! LS Posted by: Jerrilyn Location: Clay Center I was with my students in the auditorium. When we went back to the classroom, we were stunned. My parents had gone to the doctor in Wichita and I was very worried about them being away from home. The classroom televisions weren't working yet, so we all took turns going to the library to watch the coverage. Posted by: Rich Location: KS I was at Bryan Career College in a math class taught by an Arabic Teacher. He said class dismissed for the day, and all of 6 of us went over to Godfathers pizza's to watch the towers and the pentagon get attacked. It was a sad sad day. Needless to say our Teacher was not involved but he quit right after that class because he was scared he would be targeted. Which was too bad because I liked him. Thats where I was. Posted by: geordan Location: topeka i was @home on 9-11 watching it on tv it was my borthes bday Posted by: Laura Location: Topeka This is definitely one of those days I will never forget what I was doing and where I was at. I was a freshman at K-State. I first heard about what happened in my 9am algebra class. I remember everyone in the dorms was glued to the TV the rest of the day. I agree with you about the surge in patriotism. I also noticed people (myself included) took this as a wake up call to not take anything for granted. Posted by: Jim Location: Westmoreland We were on our way to pick my aunt up and take her to Topeka for her follow-up check after an operation for pancreatic cancer. We had the radio off in the car and were unaware of the story until we met up with her and a person who brought her to meet us. They said, That is really something what is happening in NYC. I said what happened? They told me and I turned the car's radio on and was glued to it or to the TV in the hospital waiting room from then on. It is interesting to note that I usually make comments about contrails made by airliners, but on that day we were in conversation and I did not notice the paucity of contrails. Once I was told, I noticed that the only contrail visible made the symbol Omega in the sky. Is that symbolic or what?---- Wow, a tragedy like that definitely has the ability to put us on our toes and notice even small signs. I agree! LS Posted by: Joshua Location: Topeka I remember excatly... I was driving going to visit a girlfriend of mine at a care center and when I walked in she immediately ran up to me and hugged me saying that world war three just started.. and that New York was just attacked, at first I really didn't understand but the look and fear in her eyes made me understand that she wasn't lying, so I stood at a care center for a while and watched the news, the only thing I could think about was my family so I drove home and my dad was already home from work watching the news, so we sat down and watched in fear for almost the whole day that this was not over.. I remember the fear and feeling and we should not give up our fight against terrorist who would harm us again if given the chance... I hope to never feel what I felt that day again.------------- Now that you mention it, the fear of not knowing what would be hit next..I remember that vividly! Remember how people were afraid to be in crowded places and I even think that halloween, some of the malls in Kansas City cancelled big trick-or-treat events to avoid having large crowds. You're right, it was a scary time! LS Posted by: dad I remember that day, early in the morning at a car dealership, with the television on. No one could believe we were under attack. Even with the availability of constant news it felt like we could not get new information quick enough. yep, remember it well. Posted by: Jan Location: Manhattan I was here in my office on the phone trying to get a warranty item taken care of when one of the guys came in and told me that we had just be attacked. I just couldn't believe it. It was terrible. Posted by: Anonymous Location: Topeka I was at Haz-Mat training at a fire station. At one point, one of the fireman came in to our class and told us that all hell had broken loose in New York. The first tower was already on fire. We watched it for awhile and was about to go back to class when the second plane hit. I just sat there and cried, thinking that this couldn't be happening. Posted by: rb Location: ne ks was driving a cab dispatcher made an annoucement over the radio. not much business that day. Posted by: BM Location: Topeka When the frist plane hit I was near Washburn taking my daughter-inlaw to pick up her car. Walk in my house about 2 mins. before the second one hit didn't think I saw it right. After that I try to find out about my cousin who was at the pentagon. A very long day and thanks to Messila she was able to tell me who to get ahold of. ----- I had some friends with parents on planes headed to JFK, trying to track down loved ones that could have been in danger, I can't imagine! LS Posted by: Mom I was working on the Plaza in KC in one of the American Century Towers. I remember I was talking to Dad on the phone. He had called to tell me what had happened when the first plane hit. He was watching the coverage on TV and we were discussing it when the second plane hit. He told me that they didn't know where the next target might be as reports came in quickly that there were more than the two planes hijacked. It was only very briefly that my co-workers and I thought maybe we should leave the building as the news was that we were being attacked. We did not. In fact, we ended up going to a conference room to watch the coverage. ----------- Mom, I remember you being scared because so many financial companies in the twin towers were attacked that it might not be safe in your building! Such a scary day. LS Posted by: Don Location: Junction City On that morning I was in my office as a school principal. I was busy working on a suspension of a student and the counselor came in and told me that the USA had just been attacked. I was in shock! |
