Are You Superstitious? A Crazy List For Friday the 13th...

I myself, am not superstitious. I don't believe much happens by chance. But I know a lot of folks do and if anything--everybody has some routine they do everyday-- in a "just in case" way.

So here's a list of things that are good and bad to do on Friday the 13th, some are old standards and some are---- OUT THERE!

Friday the 13th! -- It's bad luck to:

  • Begin a new job or a trip
  • Cut off both ends of a loaf of bread
  • Flip your mattress
  • Put new shoes on the table
  • Leave your hat on the bed
  • Walk under a ladder
  • Pour water on a windowsill
  • Plant potatoes
  • Lean a broom on a bed
  • Open an umbrella indoors
  • Do housework
  • Wear new clothes
  • Cut your hair
  • Sneeze to your left side
  • Have a black cat cross your path

It's good luck to:

  • Cut your finger nails on a Friday to avoid a toothache during the month.
  • Take candy to a friend during your first visit of the New Year.
  • Pick the first violets of spring.
  • When you set the table, place the salt down first.
  • If you drop a spoon, expect friends to drop by soon.
  • If your left hand itches, money will come to you.
  • When you move to a new house, take a broom and a loaf of bread with you.
  • Put a red bow on a newborn baby.
  • Don't sweep dust out the front door or you'll sweep away good luck.
  • Make a wish when you see the first robin of spring. If it doesn't fly away before you finish wishing it'll come true.

So what do you think? Are they crazy? Any stories of them proving true for you? Any off-beat superstitions you abide by?

Every so many years, my birthday falls on Friday the 13th. One year I stepped into a poision ivy patch and did not know it. I also turned 50 on Friday the 13th. This year I turned 55 on Friday the 13th. Friday the 13th is not bad-it is just another day for me. However, I make sure I stay safe and watch out for everyone else.

Posted by: SS well now I didnt know I could have used that excuse not to clean today! now i'm bummed cause i've already cleaned! Does this mean bad luck? lol...so far so good :)

Posted by: ps Lindsay, I just heard the guy who won 5 million bucks in a New York lottery this week say he woke up that morning with itchy palms. He said he knew this was good luck. Maybe there is something to this "itchy hand" stuff

I was not taught to be superstitious. Friday the 13th turned out to be a real good one for me back in the 60's. I was my grandmothers' first granddaughter and when my cousin and I were both expecting a 3rd child about the same time, I was in hopes I'd have the first great-granddaughter for them. (Both of us already had 2 sons.) Forbes base out here still had their hospital going then so that made 3 hospitals in the Topeka area. On Friday the 13th there were 7 children born and my daughter was the only girl! I tell people that Friday the 13th can be lucky!! ----- Fun story, thanks Lois!

well, it is a little late in the year for picking violets or seeing the first robin so that kind of limits our good luck choices!

At one time I was not freaky about Friday, the 13th until early in my marriage I had a miscarriage on one. In 1995 I lost my father in an accident on a tractor and then in April 2001, I lost my mother after she had spent several years in a nursing home. Both parents died on Friday the 13th. I am taking a vacation day and limiting my activities today. I graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2002, but Friday the 13th messes with me. I guess cleaning the house is now out of the question. ------------Oh my goodness! Well I'm so sorry for all of that! If I were you I would be taking a vacation today too. Hope it didn't ruin your plans to plant potatoes :) LS
