It seems like I have said, "this is the hottest day so far, in 2011" so many times. And every time the temperature has been amazing.
There are some years, that Topeka never hits 100 degrees.
But this year has been different. A persistent "ridge" in the Jet Stream has kept us in sunshine and very hot weather since June 29th.
In late May, I started a forecast contest for "The Greatest Forecaster In The World". The question was, "what day will Topeka see our first temperature at or above 100 degrees?" The answer turned out to be June 30. But, it would be hard to imagine then how nasty this heat wave would be.
Including June 30, we have hit 100 degrees or more 21 times.
The peak of the heat wave has been August 1 and August 2.
August 1, 2011 was the first time we hit 109 since September of 2000. That's a long time.
But, August 2, 2011 was even hotter with 112 degrees. The first time we have seen that number since Topeka reached 113 on August 13th and 14th of 1936.
Remember this year. It could be decades before we see a day as hot as August 1, 2011. I hope!
