On Sunday...  June 1... I was on the phone with Drew discussing the potential for a potential Thursday Severe Weather Outbreak.  This conversation felt like "Deja Vu".  Looking back at recent Thursdays... it is no wonder why a Severe Weather Risk on a Thursday seemed natural at this point.  The forecast for this Thursday, June 12 is for thunderstorms again.  Potentially severe.

The maps below show severe weather recaps of each Thursday, going back to April 10, 2008.

do you actually get paid for trying to do the weather

Posted by: Paul Location: Silver Lake
Cold air funnel... I knew that... teaches me for not proofreading before hitting submit. I wasn't being critical of the warning. I just think that spotters need to know the difference. It's just like the scud clouds under some of the storms; they are scary looking and have lots of turbulence but they don't pose a threat. Thanks for the response - it's been a busy couple of weeks for you!

Posted by: Paul Location: Silver Lake
Just curious... were the conditions today (06192008) favorable for cold weather funnels? I didn't see one in person but in the photos there were similarities. Thanks.

not actually called "cold weather funnels" it would be a "cold air funnel", or a "sheer funnel". air aloft was much colder... creating the updraft. also, had a tight shift in winds overhead. wasn't the optimal set-up for them... but if you see 1... in a highly populated area... the perception is that it was a "big day". had the funnel dropped over a few cows in a rural area and not been spotted... the perception would be much different. jeremy

Have a game scheduled tonight southwest at 6:15. Will we get it in?

yes

Posted by: Dave Location: Emporia
B Grant can start his/her own TV station and do whatever, ignoring dangerous weather, but we all know which station had the viewers during these storms! Good luck with that, B Grant. The rest of us will keep watching JG.

Posted by: Christine Location: Manhattan
I have an idea - let's just skip Thursday this week and call it Friday!

Posted by: Rosann Location: Waverly
For B. Grant tell him everyone else appreciates the continued coverage that you do. TV programs are not that important anyway, I would rather be safe then blown away!!

You know, Jeremy, we cuss your forecasts a lot of times, but for your superb continuous forecasting/reporting the Chapman tornado we cannot thank you enough! We took cover and although scared to death and thanking the Lord for going on over the top of us with so little damage to our property, we came through. Thank you again, you are appreciated!--Millie Fink, Chapman

Thank you so much for the heads up on the tornado and sticking with us on continuous coverage. We had plenty of warning and time to get to the basement because of you and your teams accurate and timely predictions. Very Sincerely, Toni Fink

No gripes on the storm warning coverage, one idea: for people who are camping and out of state it would be helpful to list the name(s) of state and/or federal campgrounds within the storm area.

Posted by: RS You guys have been great the last couple of weeks with all the storms and all the hours you have put in to keep us all informed. My daughters were upset they've missed some of their shows during the evenings while you reported on the weather, but after last night, they appreciate your work more. I'm really surprised we didn't get more tornadoes last night, the air, temps, etc were all there. Thanks again JG, DW, and CS, we appreciate you.

Posted by: janet rediker We so appreciate your storm coverage of the Emporia area last eve, so many times we are half way in between Wichita and Kansas City, so our weather kinds gets omitted? Appreciate your wonderful radar last eve.

Posted by: Sandra Location: Topeka
I just want to say thank you for keeping us informed and safe you are my hero :)

Not trained, but off to the north I would say that there was a well formed wall cloud. Spotted some rotation. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: Barbara Location: Topeka

Posted by: Ryan Location: S.E. Shawnee heights rd 61st

I just wanted to let you know, Jeremy, how appreciative my family is that you cover the weather like you do! You and the rest of the crew do a great job keeping us safe and informed! No TV program is more important than keeping us all safe! Keep up the good work!!! We are thankful for you!!!

Once again the topic is: I didn't hear the sirens. Nor did I. I had fallen asleep watching the TV trying to stay aware of the developing weather conditions. My question is, with everyone glued to their TV late into the night, is it possible to sound the "Emergency Broadcast Warning" on the TV? Under normal circumstances, it is irritating, but with televisions on and viewers asleep, this may be part of the solution to "I didn't hear any sirens"

I sure hope you don't take the likes of "B Grant" too seriously... honestly, ever heard of reruns, dude? Or is CSI more important than actual lives? I for one am totally fine with the good folks at WIBWbreaking in with anything they feel we need to know. I watched every minute of the coverage last night and appreciated the hours of hard work. I am sure, beyond a doubt, that there are people alive today because of the advanced warnings that Jeremy, Drew and Rob worked so hard to provided. Thanks guys, from the bottom of my heart. I really will bring you a cake when all is said and done this spring. You guys are heroes, IMHO... right up there with my Marine husband!

I was watching the weather last night and was upset to hear you say that some people were unhappy with you for being on with continual coverage. I would hate to think what could have happened if you weren't doing that last night. Four deaths are bad enough but without you and your team working around the clock it could have been so much worse. I for one am very happy that you are there and do what you do so well. Your team are people Kansas can count on and YOU ARE APPRECIATED VERY MUCH.

I thank you for your info on the severe weather!! I'm originally from Mitchell Co. It's nice to see coverage that far. I can tell if my family is in danger. Just one question. How are your accommodations for these late nights? Motel 6 or Embassy Suites, or just a dorm room ,not that you get time to sleep. Is there food available? What does your wife think about all those late nights? Just wondering as I'm sitting at home watching with my family. Thank you to the whole team!!! It's nice to see the pictures without having to be there. Thanks again to everyone! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

Hey Jeremy, Drew, Rob, and team: I just wanted to say thanks for all that you do. I lived in Manhattan for three years before moving to Colorado Springs, and I even pariticipated with and coordinated the WX spotters for Riley co while there. I must say, you guys do an EXCELLENT job with your coverage. Even last night, your live streaming coverage was up on my laptop, 2nd only to GRLevel3, as a primary tool for monitoring the devastating storms headed for Manhattan. I know there's always "one of those people" out there who complain about your coverage, but the WIBW wx team saves lives with the work you do...NO DOUBT IN MY MIND. I feel better having friends and family under the watchful eyes of WIBW and the TOP CWA. You guys are top notch, and your my first stop for coverage during active weather periods affecting friends and family in northeast KS! Just tell that Darin Brunin fellow to get his act together :)

Posted by: Katie Location: Manhattan
In regards to selfish comment made by the viewer frustrated when you break in to programming - consider yourself lucky that you and your loved ones were/are not in the path of an approaching tornado. WIBW - we appreciate your coverage. I was glued to my TV last night (11th) and I would have gotten frustrated if you would have cut away from your broadcast! We live in the country, away from tornado sirens, so we rely 110% on you and your staff. THANK YOU for what you do. To the other viewer: sorry to break it to you, the world does not revolve around you.

Posted by: Jared Beer Location: Elmont
The tornado sirens went off in elmont last night what a relief, Since the recent problems with the local sirens not working we went out and purchased a NOAA weather radio, That was programmed for shawnee and surrounding counties, and the stupid thing never made a peep. Any suggestions before throwing in trash.

On behalf of my family and friends that gathered in our basement last night for cover, we would like to say THANK YOU to the entire 13 News Weather Team for keeping us safe. Living out in the country east of Manhattan by Lake Elbo, we had to rely on our satelite dish to bring us coverage from you and except for about 10-15 minutes when the satelite went out we were able to hear everything you were broadcasting on tv. Even though I've read about a few people being upset because they missed their " television shows" but I think people's lives are more important than a tv show even if it's not in their immediate area. I again want to let you know how much MY FAMILY TRULY appreciates everything you have done (especially in the last few weeks)to keep us safe and informed. I don't know what we would have done without your indepth coverage and advanced warnings to take cover. Have a great weekend! Thanks again!

Jeremy and the AWESOME weather team! Thank you all for your hard work in keeping us all safe and informed with this bad weather we have been having. We always know we have you all watching our backs. We were watching you last night and knew to take cover early thanks to you guys. Our thoughts go out to all those people that didn't make it out safe last night.

Denison Ave is very close to Mercy Regional Hosptial...wanting to make sure everyone is okay there...can you find out anything?? Please

Posted by: Barb Location: Topeka
Jeremy. JUST A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPER "KEEPING US SAFE AND INFORMED TONITE WITH THIS VERY LONG TORNADO NITE

Posted by: B Grant Location: Hoyt
I can't believe that you continue to break in to EVERY program on a daily/hourly basis with weather information and then cover the tv screen with all the stuff you do! Can't you just announce the weather for our area and then put a small map in the lower corner?? What you did last week when you put all the tornado warnings, etc. on the air was nothing more than scare tactics. Why scare the heck out of people? Do Not Tell Me it is to keep me safe and informed! A moron can be informed without the information you continue to put on the air!

I will assume that you wrote this rant before lives were changed on Wednesday night. Jeremy

Thursday (12th) is my birthday.... no storms please, Jeremy!

Posted by: PATTY Location: QUENEMO
JG I CAN REMEMBER ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO (MAYBE LESS) BUT EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT THERE WAS A SEVERE T STORM DOWN THIS WAY.

Posted by: Mark Location: Waverly
Dang jg, I guess every Thursday for now on, we all should go ahead and pull in our vehicles into our garages-lol

Posted by: Bri Location: Council Grove
I think there were maybe two or three track meets that I went to this year that it didn't storm. Track is not fun in the rain.

Posted by: sue I really appreciated the shelter being open at the expo center I really hope it will an on going event. It really gives you peace to know you have a place to go

Posted by: Matt Location: Home city/Marysville
Hey. on thursday there were some tornado touchdowns in marysville! one just south of marysville and one at the golf course

Posted by: Anita Location: Topeka
I am terrified of tornadoes and am so tired of severe storms that spawn them! Do you expect tornadoes Thursday? Do you see any end to this severe weather pattern we seem to be in? I love your live blog...it comforts me to be able to ask questions and get answers. Thank you for the great job you and the rest of the team do!

tornadoes are possible on thursday... but the risk is not "high" will have more details as we get closer. jeremy

My daughter had a music class that met on Thursdays until early May... all the moms were saying it rained every Thursday for the last month or more of classes (March and April)... we were all saying we needed to have the teacher switch the class to Wednesdays. Kind of funny, kind of weird...

Posted by: Barb Location: Topeka
Jeremy, Hey I have an idea, lets just remove Thursdays from the day of the week, it sure seems like it always hits on Thursdays. I really appreciate all of your hard work in keeping us updated on the weather minute by minute, even if its all nite long. You are very dedicated to your job, Thank you very much for keeping us informed and safe. I always watch the weather on WIBW as it is I feel the most accurate. Thanks again you do a fantastic job.

Posted by: Dylan Location: Topeka
Thursday is not a good day to be in Kansas I guess. That is crazy.

Posted by: John Location: Topeka
Why didn't WIBW break into local broadcast Sunday afternoon when the National Weather Service put Shawnee Co.under a severe thunderstom warning?

Our power was out. We have a MASSIVE generator to keep that from happening, but in this case... we took the power hit. A rare incident to be sure, but like everybody else who depends on power... it is vital to our operation. JG
