5:30PM Update:

Our first "Storm Watch" of the day will be issued shortly.  This will be in Oklahoma, but may cross into southern Kansas.  Forecast is still on track for late night severe weather in northeast Kansas.  Full text of this discussion from Storm Prediction Center is available here.... http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0715.html

3:15PM Update:

This map was updated by Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma at 3PM.  It represents the "probability of a tornado within 25 miles of a point".  That means that if you live in Salina... there is a 1/10 chance of a tornado touching down within 25 miles of you.  The statement is true for the entire area circled in dark brown with the 10%.  Topeka is right on the border of the 5% risk.  For perspective, during "major" outbreaks, these numbers can be in the 40% to 50% range.  That said, this is still a risk and must be treated as such.

SPC Day 1 2000Z Tornado Prob Outlook

2:45PM Update:

Web Weather video is updated.  Longer explanation of SuperCast data included.  Gives a good idea of when/where the greatest risk for severe weather will exist.

Jeremy

2:15PM Update

SuperCast imagery shows a significant surface low pressure area over Hays Kansas at 2AM.  Note the thin black lines in a big circle around the low.  Surface winds will flow approximately right along those lines.  The line of storms from Republic County to Kansas City is along the "warm front".  Winds are from the southwest below the front and from the Southeast above the front.  Storms along that line will have the potential to rotate and tornadoes are definitely possible.  The low pressure area and warm front will be moving east or northeast overnight and will give much of the area a risk of severe weather.  If this projection plays out exactly... a Tornado Watch along and north of I-70 would be likely.

1:50PM A significant risk of severe weather is in place this evening and tonight for much of Kansas.  The highest tornado risk is in central and north central Kansas, however the entire region must be monitored for dangerous weather.  If you have any questions fire away.  I will update this blog often today and tonight. The latest Severe Weather Risk, from the Storm Prediction Center is below.

Thanks for the awesome coverage on TV! I watched your broadcast until the storm weakened in Washington County. We had 1.25" of rain, but 5 miles to our north had 4". Thanks again to everyone!

I'm glad the protective bubble worked for us again. I slept through everything. I didn't even know there was a tornado untill late this afternoon. Maybe i'll move my bedroom to the basement!!

I also have problems getting the streaming audio/video from the website. I have tried darn near everything like enabling cookies, to testing on other computers.. 10% of the time it works the other 90% it doesn't.. Not sure why.. Thank you Jeremy, Drew, and Candice for the coverage on TV..

Winds are gone here. The storm in Concordia how fast is it moving and when will it reach Wamego or will we bypass it. The radar looks like we will catch the bottom end of it. Am I right. It's real quiet now, that is kind of scary; the calm before the storm. Should we be worried here. Thanks

Storm misse you. Went north. More t-storms are developing and moving your way for 5AM(ish). Doubt they will be severe, but could have small hail and winds to 40. Jeremy

  • by Wyatt Location: Manhattan on Apr 25, 2008 at 02:07 AM
Do you think we are still going to receive heavy rain and large hail in Manhattan. When do you think it will be here? Thanks for the help?

You will likely see heavy rain around 5AM. Doubt hail will be too large if you get it. Jeremy

I am basically on the wabaunsee co/ pottawottomie county line in wamego and the wind has really picked up here. It looks like we are ahead of the storms, they seem to be building to the south of the supercell from what i can tell on the radar. This is scary weather!
  • by Priscilla Location: Wamego on Apr 25, 2008 at 01:44 AM
It's about 1:45 here. Winds just started picking up. Will stay up also. TV keeps cutting out can't get much on computer. Can you tell me what's going on. How far away is the middle of the cell from us and how much longer for it to pass over. Thanks for everything. Your great.

Sorry I am late getting back to you. Looks like rotation has dropped off for now. Will let you know if it picks up again. Jeremy

Hi. The wind has picked up here and it is eerie outside. How soon will the storm be here? These storms are scary because it is dark outside and u can't see what is going on.

Not sure where you are? JG

Thanks for the great coverage of the NC KS counties of Jewell, Mitchell, Osborne, Republic. My family is in Jewell and kind of a 'black hole' for television coverage. I really appreciate it and thanks for staying up to cover the severe weather.
  • by Anita Location: Topeka on Apr 25, 2008 at 12:06 AM
I am terrified of tornadoes and don't have a basement. You said at 10:00 that so far the storms are going North of Topeka. Does it still look that way? I live on North 46th St.

    Still looks that way. Jeremy

  • by Mary Location: Wamego on Apr 24, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Hey Jeremy I think I will stay up after all. You and Drew say the tornado is moving along Hwy 24 and that runs through Wamego. It has stayed together for 6 hours right? It should be here around 2am if it stays together as it has, is that what u think? I have an 18 month old daughter to consider so I would rather not take the chance of not waking up in time. Let me know what u think ok. Thanks to you and Drew both for keeping all of us safe:)

Looking better for you now. Storm is pulling a little farther north. Jeremy
