Now that KU has made it official with the firing of Turner Gill, the obvious question is: who's next?

Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leech's name has been thrown out there, and with good reason.  Leech revolutionized the entire offensive structure, not only of Texas Tech, but of the entire Big 12.

KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger has deep ties to Kansas State (after all, he did coach with Bill Snyder in Manhattan), so anyone from the Snyder coaching tree would get a long hard look.  A couple of those guys already have head coaching experience, but don't have a job... Others have not had a shot as a head coach.  I'll throw some of those out there (in no particular order)

Phil Bennett was the D-Coordinator at K-State before taking the head coaching job at Southern Methodist.  Though his track record at SMU was pretty bad, just 19-52 (including a game as interim coach at Pitt for one game). He is currently the D-Coordinator at Baylor... (doesn't exactly scream Defense).

Jim Leavitt was the D-Coordinator at KSU prior to Bennett. Leavitt left the K-State program to become the first ever head coach at South Florida when the Bulls added football as a sport in 1995 (they didn't start playing until 97).  His record with USF was pretty darn good 94-57.  Leavitt though left under fire that he allegedly struck a player in the locker room.  He denied the allegations and settled with the school. Leavitt is currently the Linebackers coach with the 49ers.

Brent Venables is currently the associate head coach and Defensive Coordinator at Oklahoma.  He was at Kansas State early in his career, but left with Bob Stoops when Stoops left for OU.  Venables played at K-State and knows the recruiting trails in the Big 12 well.  He has been rumored as a candidate for multiple head coaching positions, but has yet to land/accept one.

Who else do you think KU should look at?
