Recently, I went to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince at 12:01. I enjoyed the film, but as is the case with most Potter flicks, I have trouble comparing it against the books. A little too much teen "love," and not quite enough adventure. I'm sure eventually, I'll be able to step back, and just enjoy the movie for what it is, another interpretation on J.K. Rowling's masterpiece.
It's the fifth midnight premiere I've seen in 2009 (Wolverine, Terminator, Star Trek, and Transformers). I absolutely love seeing the 12:01 showings of movies. I love that the crowds are "into it" more than any other viewing audience. I love the sense of community you get seeing the film before anybody else. I love that you hear people cheer and boo when intense portions come up. Plus, I'm a night owl, and I work right by the movie theater, so it's an easy trip up the hill to hop into line.
As far as midnight movies go, I'd have to say that I enjoyed seeing the Star Wars movies the most (prequels, of course). I can remember getting big groups of people together for Episodes II and III, and dressing up like a complete nerd (hey, I wave my banner high). The anticipation of the crowd was palpable, and of course the 501 Legion attended in their best Empire garb.
What about you? What's your favorite midnight movie? Or do you think we're all just crazy, and need to get a good night's sleep?
