I don't exactly know how to feel right now. When I heard that Michael Jackson did on Thursday afternoon, I was shocked at first. Then I went through a myriad of emotions. I was in denial for awhile, hoping that TMZ's report would be wrong, but it wasn't. I know that he's had some interesting twists in his personal life, the biggest of all including -major- accusations concerning child molestation, but let's remember that he was not found guilty of anything. I digress...
The first few videos I ever remember watching were MJ's. I remember Thriller scaring the heck out of me, and Bad making me want to go get a leather jacket. Man in the Mirror is an anthem that will resonate forever, and I'll never forget seeing Eddie and Magic in his Remember the Time video. His music will last forever. He changed a genre, and opened doors for EVERY artist behind him. Just think about the history. Everything from the Jackson 5 days up to his latest preparations for a comeback in the coming months. I'm watching every TV in the newsroom with some sort of tribute or coverage on his death.
Upon talking to another friend who was in disbelief this evening, we determined that Jackson could end up like Elvis in the future. Our children won't have lived a single day while Michael was alive, but will still know of him, and his music as if he were still recording. His music will be much like the title of one of his album's "Invincible."
I think I'll go home and play some of my old favorites, and reflect on one of the greatest musicians who ever lived, and passed way too soon.
