It's official, the Kansas City Chiefs have dealt Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons for a second round pick. Gone is the all time leader amongst Tight Ends in receptions, yards, touchdowns, and overall awesomeness. As a lifelong Chiefs fan, I'm sad... But as a current Chiefs fan, I'm excited. "Why", you may ask. Or you may ask "what drugs are you on?" No, I'm not on narcotics, just thinking about things as a general manager would, and that's what Scott Pioli (thankfully) did. He pulled the trigger on a deal King Carl couldn't.
Yes, Gonzalez has been the face of the franchise for over a decade, and he's the most prolific Chief of our generation... but that's why everybody should be so excited. If you think of NFL players as a commodity (which GM's do), you'll see how much value KC has actually gotten from Tony G. He was a first round pick a dozen years ago. Now, after the 10 pro bowls and all of the records, the Chiefs are getting a second round choice out of him. Not to shabby to have over a decade of service from an uber-productive player, and get so much value at the twilight of his career.
Now sure, it's going to be tough to see "our" TE in another jersey. And it's going to be tough to see no immediate impact from the trade (2010 pick, not 2009). But, I know it the right decision... no matter how much it pulls at my heart strings.
