Who's Your Favorite Band?

Anybody who really knows me, knows that I'm a huge music fan.  I enjoy all different genres, but alternative, and rock would have to be my favorite.  I really like to catch bands that are on their way up, and I like some stuff that most people haven't heard of.  Right now, I'm listening to a band out of Kansas City called Vedera (formerly Veda).  Awesome!  Think Paramore, only with more feeling.

My favorite band at the moment is The Format, but seeing how they just broke up in February, I need to find a new one.  A buddy (yes you Travis) has tried to turn me on to a band out of St. Louis called Ludo. (They have a song called Topeka).  They're good, but not favorite band material.  Of course I like the standard mainstream Punk/Pop/Rock acts: Dashboard, John Mayer, 30 Seconds, Foo Fighters, Hoobastank, Jimmy Eat World, MCR, Panic, FOB, Snow Patrol, et. al.

But I'm looking for someone more along the lines of slightly obscure, i.e.: Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Amos Lee, Iron and Wine, etc.  So I'm asking everybody who their favorite band/artist/group/act is to try and help turn me on to some new stuff.  Any genre is welcome, but if anybody suggests the Stones or Nickleback, my head will explode.

Rock On!!

J.B.

Posted by: Whitney\ I just found a band called Ha Ha Tonka, they're pretty good. A couple of others, The Kooks, The Feeling, The Weepies, Kyle Ribako.

Response: Hey thanks, I'll check em out. I really like the Kooks, and they're playing in KC at the end of the month.

I have actual sugestion unlike the rest of these people...Say Anything and Against Me!...Two great bands...

Response: Hey thanks, I really like Say Anything, and I've heard some Against Me. I'll check them out in more depth. Great stuff!

I never heard of these bands and I'm glad of that. May be you should try some old country style music so you can understand the words to the songs - it might be a good surprise and you will enjoy for a change of style. The newer country is too much like Rock/punk because the singer(s) can't sing so they cover it with loud music - ugh. Go Country but try the old up to at least the early 90's style. Ray Price, Oak Ridge Boys, The Excels, Alan Jackson, Stadler Brothers and Ray Stevens are just a few. Enjoy - and I know everyone has their style and I'm trying not to offend anyone. Country has some roudy songs and not just ballads that you might want to explore.

Response: Thanks for the suggestion... but I think I'll pass, respectfully. I went throught my country music phase in middle school. I still love Garth. Saw him live in Manhattan years and years ago.

I love Journey! What do you think about them?

Response: DON'T STOP... BELIEVING! lol.

Response: I'll check 'em out.

My favorite band is No Doubt can't wait for the regroup!!!! Anyway right now I'm on a Robyn kick.

Response: No Doubt was great on Tragic Kingdom, but they went downhill after that.

Anchondo is a great little band out of Nebraska. They sound very much like Sublime. They have been coming to play in Topeka off and on. We'll go check them out the next time they come to Topeka!

Response: Thanks for the heads up. Our resident music expert/photog Jovarie has seen them live, and loves their stuff.

The Eagles, Did I just show my age???

Response: Nah, good band.

Posted by: PS The original Skynard is gone too, but his music isn't ;-) Sorry JB, since we don't go anywhere, can't help ya with "new" ones.

Response: No problem, I still appreciate the "old" ones too.

You don't like Nickleback....dude!!! One of my faves is Dave Matthews. Awesome group!

Response: DUDE! Dave is great for when you wanna just kick it.

The Ya ya ya's (a couple of years old) are good. I am also into Pete Yorn.

Response: I have to be in the right mood for the Ya's, and they have some more recent stuff (Gold Lion), and I've seen Pete Yorn in concert w/ Aqualung in Lawrence. Good, but not outstanding.

If you like John Mayer and Dashboard, then try Tyrone Wells. You should enjoy it I think. Listen to a couple of his songs see what you think.

Response: Wells is good, I just think I might want to cry myself to sleep if he's on too long. He actually reminds me a little of Amos Lee (who's great).

Posted by: Brandi I don't know if it's in your taste, but I like System of a Down. (Toxicity is my favorite song by them.) A long time favorite is Queen. Been listening to them my entire life.

Response: Yeah, System is good. Right now their lead singer Serj is doing a solo project. As for Queen, well Freddy Mercury is dead so that throws them out of the favorite "current" band idea. Good choices though.
