A Rare "Sundog" Spotted in NE Kansas.

This morning I had a few calls and emails about a rainbow in the sky. I was quite confused as to how there could have been a rainbow because there is not moisture falling from the sky. Then I saw the above photos submitted to capture kansas on our website and it all made sense. What many of you thought was a rainbow was infact a rare atmospheric phenominon known as a "Sundog". It looks like the sun has twin baby brothers.
Sundogs are most commonly seen on cold mornings or evening ( like today) when the sun is low in the sky. Sundogs are formed (in this case) by ice crystals (sometimes called diamond dust) floating in the low levels of the atmosphere.
