Even for the coldest of winter standards, we are dealing with some unusually cold weather in Kansas and really across most of the country. Many spots in the deep South will not even make it above freezing for the next couple of days. There will likley be a huge impact on the fruit crop. Expect the price of orange juice to go up quite a bit shortly.
Tomorrow (Friday, January 8th) the forecasted high is +2 degrees. There is a chance that we will not make it even above zero in many spots. So when was the last time it was THIS cold? 1989 is the answer - 20 years ago! This is one of if not the coldest blast of arctic air we have seen since the 1980s! Thas impressive. In December of 1989 there was a day where the High temp in Topeka was -9 degrees. It won't be quite that cold - but close.
Do you remember that cold snap 20 years ago?
