Last night on CBS, The Academy of Country Music recognized George Straight as the Artist of the decade for 1999-2009. They held a tribute concert in which all the big names of country music sang George Straight songs. The show aired last evening (way past my bedtime) so I DVRed it and watched it this morning on my lunch break. It was a fantastic event to recognize one of the greatest country music singers of all time. It was amazing to see the artists come up to the stage, one after the other, and every one of them talked about how much they had been influenced by George Straight. George sat there with a big smile on his face and would gently nod in a sign of approval as each artist sang his songs. Several of the singers came over and had George sign their guitars. It was cool to see that even though these people are considered "big time" stars you could still see they were true fans and idolized George Straight. Garth Brooks was the artist of the decade for the 1990s and "passed the torch" on to George. He did an excellent job in describing how awkward it felt for him to pass an award on to George Straight. He said "I pass on the torch to a man that has been carrying the torch of country music for the past 30 years." It was a cool moment. The ending was very neat as George sang his final song he invited all the artists that had sang that night up on stage to sing along with him. So here you had all the huge names of country music from Toby Keith to Tim McGraw to Taylor Swift singing on the same stage as George Straight, yet there was no doubt who the true "king" was. Did you catch the show? What are your thoughts? |

I wish I could buy an album with all the songs that were sung -just like it happened. It was incredible Posted by: Robyn Location: topeka Just to let you know it is George Strait. Not George Straight. Posted by: Jan Location: Topeka I loved the show very much. He is so deserving of this award, and I like the fact that his wife and son were there with him. I admire their relationship and their longevity. Most of the artist were good, but there is only one George Strait and I love him so much. Posted by: Debbie Location: Nebraska I loved the show. I sure do wish I could find the last song, that the lady sang, something called "hero" or something. If anyone knows it, please coment it. Thanks Posted by: greg Location: kansas Awesome tribute. Nice to see the ACM realizes George is "king". Got worried when Keith Urban appeared on stage. If he sang George Strait the show was over for me. He is in the Rascal Flats-Sugerland type of music. Ever heard "Murder on Music Road" Posted by: sharon Location: emporia ks wonderful show. this is the first one i have watched in along time. would watch it again Posted by: Ken Location: Alliance, NE Don't forget the Ace In The Hole Band was a BIG part of George's early & continued success! Posted by: Danielle Location: St. George Ks I loved the show. All the singers did great, especially George Strait. He sings true country and is one of the best singers of all times. In my book George has been the best for more than a decade and i hope he is around for a long time to come. Posted by: Donna Location: Oklahoma Does anyone know who the girl was that was with George Strait's son? Posted by: Deb Location: Topeka George Straight is one of the last true country singers who has stayed true to what made him famous on who he is. Loved the show. Posted by: Donna Thompson Location: Wamego.Kansas Loved the show but will it air again so I can watch it again. One of the best shows I have seen in a long time Posted by: Sharon Location: Kansas I really did enjoy the whole concert. George is King as far as my whole family is concerned. Long live King George Strait!!!I have sang along with his music ever since he started in the buz. Sometimes its hard to hear others sing his music, but most did a good job. Like Jamie Foxx verion of George's song also. Real good show. Posted by: Joanne Location: Ottawa, Ontario Canada I absolutely loved the whole show. I especially love Keith Urban getting down and country. Awesome performance and he looks amazing in a suit! Posted by: Gloria Location: Georgia I really enjoyed the show. I couldn't get over how great Keith Urban sang Marty Robbins songs. I loved Marty Robbins music! Hope Keith Urban records some country music...he's got the voice. I thought Tim McGraw was good. Could not stand Jack Ingram and his performance. I thought Dierks, Taylor, John Rick were all flat on their performances. I hope one of the Country music channels air it again. Great Show! Posted by: sherrie Location: california I would love to be able to buy the songs that were sung last night by the people that sang them. I loved it Posted by: Kay Location: Savannah, GA I loved it, especially Blake Shelton's rendition of "It Ain't Cool" and keith Urban's tribute to Marty Robbins. I would love to see it again since I missed part of it. Will it air again? If so, when? Posted by: David Location: topeka well done, enjoyable to see the different artists and hear their interpatation of classic songs . George deserved this accolade . Keep up the good work and keep putting out the hits Posted by: Keri Location: Junction City I agree with you Drew! It was a wonderful tribute to a man that paved the way for country music. John Rich was the best bringing out the Sharpie only to pave the way for other noteable artists having George sign their guitars as well. Well done CBS!
