Storm Season is Near. Become a Storm Spotter.

Multiple times each year Kansas gets rocked by severe weather.  We see hail, winds, heavy rains, and even tornadoes.  It is my job to report on these events and offer as much information to our viewers in order to keep you "safe and informed."  We have some excellent equipment that gives us a very good idea of what is happening with each storm.  However, one of this most important pieces of the puzzle when it comes to severe weather coverage is receiving a constant stream of reliable local storm reports, or LSRs.   These LSRs give us confidence in what a particular storm is doing and what it will eventually do.  The more people we have relaying the reports, the more accurate we can be in our coverage.

Each year during late winter, leading into the upcoming severe weather season, the National Weather Service offers numerous chances for our residents to join the network of storm spotters who will be of vital importance when it comes to collecting storm reports.  The training sessions last about one hour and are filled with all sorts of information that instruct your how to accurately observe storms and pass along the vital information that we need.  These lectures are extremely well planned and are well worth it.  You will walk out them with a much better understanding of Severe Weather.

There will be at least one training session held in each county with some counties having two sessions.  With nearly 30 sessions this year, there is sure to be a session that fits your schedule.  Even if  you have already attended a session in the past, I encourage you to go back.  A re-fresher can be very useful.  I will even attend at least one session to get my mind back in severe weather mode.

Follow the following link to see a complete list of the storm spotter training session in our area.  The first one is on February 19th and the last one is on March 31st.
