Clay Center resident Mike Smith has shot a 27-point doe with antlers still covered in velvet.
"It's a real oddity," Wakefield taxidermist Tom Bowman said, who confirmed the find. "It's very, very rare." Smith plans to do a full-body mount to show the uniqueness of the find. A full body mount would be highly valued. Up to 30 points are rare, but not unheard of, on bucks, let alone on a doe. While does with antlers are not uncommon, several hunters have reported shooting them, usually between a couple points to 14 points. "It's not unheard of, it does occur on a doe occasionally," Bowman said. Smith's doe is unusual not only in number of points, but also in that is an asymmetrical, nontypical rack with 11 points on one side and 16 on the other. "There's a lot of abnormal points," he said. "It's very non-typical." Missouri hunter Howard Becker, Saroxi, shot a 28-point doe with low-hanging antlers still covered in velvet in November 2006, according to a post on www.huntingbc.ca. Becker preserved the hide and antlers, but did not do a full-body mount. Smith was unavailable for comment by press time today. |
