On Saturday afternoon the Emporia State women's softball team played for the Division II National Championship and ended up losing 1-0 to Humboldt State...at least that's what the record books will indicate. I was watching the game as it got down to the final innings and in the bottom of the 6th inning (they only play 7 innings in softball) with one runner on base and the Hornets trailing 1-0, April Huddleston ripped a deep drive down the left field line that easily cleared the fence...the umpire called it foul, and at first I was convinced that the umpire had made a bad call. JB Bauersfeld and I reviewed the tape after the game with our equipment here at the station we were able to look at the play frame by frame as the ball went over the fence. It is pretty clear that the ball was indeed foul...but by mere inches. Take a look at the video and decide for yourself. The ump did make a good call but you can see just how close Emporia State was to winning this game and forcing another game....tough luck. I do want to say congrats to the team for a great run through the post season.
