Talkin' Football in April?!?!

The only reason to talk football in April is because it is the last weekend of April and the NFL Draft is taking place.  Our beloved Chiefs had a season to forget in 2007, going 4-12 and losing their last 9 games in a row.  So how do you go from 4-12 to feeling good about your team in 4 months???  Well it's the first time in a long time that the Chiefs have made a very large splash on draft day.  Not only did we make a large splash on day one, but in the first 2 hours of the draft 2 of the best players in college football last year were wearing KC Chiefs caps.

Going 4-12 is a very difficult thing to do, you almost have to try, but the great thing about going 4-12 is it will give you a top 5 pick.  Top 5 picks in the NFL Draft very often go on to have prolific pro careers.  There was talk that the Chiefs would trade away the #5 pick and I didn't like the idea of that.  Again, it's not easy to get a #5 pick.  When our pick came, possibly the best player in the draft was still on the board and we correctly pulled the trigger on Glenn Dorsey, an absolute best of a defensive tackle.

I talked to one of my good buddies shortly after the Chiefs made this selection and he thought the Chiefs should have taken a trade in which it was rumored the Saints were offering to swap our #5 for their #10 and then give us a second round pick and their first round pick in the 2009 draft, and that would have been an offer to consider.  However, that seems to be a rumor.  So get excited Brad.

I also spoke with my brother shortly after the pick and he wasn't too excited.  My brother, Matt Switzer, said I could mark his prediction down.  Glenn Dorsey has had some injury problems and Matt predicts it will lead to an injury plagued pro career.  I disagree and think he will continue what he did in college at LSU playing in the SEC and go on to have an all pro type career.  Only time will tell.

Earlier in the week the Chiefs traded away our best player, Jared Allen and acquired a 1st, 3rd, and 5th round pick from the Vikings.  Many Chiefs fans were not happy with this and righfully so.  At least we did something with those picks.  We traded up from the #17 spot and selected Branden Albert, a huge and athletic offensive lineman that played guard in college but may play left tackle for us.

So to sum it up in the first 2 hours of the draft the Chiefs now have perhaps the best player in the draft in Glenn Dorsey and an offensive lineman that could easily grow into a pro-bowl type player.  I'm excited!

What are your thoughts....

I love talking football anytime of the year. With Jared Allen we were starting to see the "trade me" complaints, and he might have evolved into a team distraction. He might have a better career in Minnesota, who knows, but at least he won't affect the clubhouse mood in Kansas City. Rebuilding in KC is slow, but Herm might be on track. This coming year is going to make or break Herm, so I hope the Chiefs make big strides of improvement.

I am just ready for Football. College and Pro. and I don't care about the draft. I just want to watch football again.

With Jared Allen being traded I was wondering what the heck they were thinking, but our draft picks have great potential right now, and i'm very excited to see who else we get.
