Spring Turkey Season is Here!

Spring Turkey season began last Thursday and runs until the end of May.  Spring turkey hunting is the most unique and challenging type of hunting there is and that is probably the reason it is not as popular as other types of hunting like ducks and deer.  I love getting out in the spring and chasing the boss tom gobbler around the woods.  I will try my luck this week and the weather is looking good.  This year will be a little different than most spring turkey seasons because the greenery on the trees and bushes is just now starting to bloom.  The woods are wide open and that will make it easier to see but it will also make it harder to hide.

In Missouri the youth turkey season was this past weekend and my cousin, Harry, scored a nice tom on Saturday morning.  When I got the phone call that he was successful it got me really excited to get out and see if I could match his success.  Stay tuned for the story of my adventure into the spring woods.

Feel free to post your thoughts about the spring turkey season and post any stories you have, successful or unsuccessful.

I must also make it clear, because our photo-journalist Eric Ives has pointed this out to me, but for bow hunters the spring season has been open for a couple weeks.  Eric is attempting to harvest a gobbler with a a bow....its hard enough with a gun.  Good luck Eric!

Posted by: Darin B. You are right about the challenging part. It is an awesome feeling when you call a big tom in close though. BTW...I will be the braggin wall champion this year!

Posted by: RS How's the hunt going Drew? Glad to hear Eric is a bowhunter, that's great.

Turkey hunting 2008 is here! Yahoo! I shot a 23 pounder last weekend West of Manhattan. I had no decoy out because they were already gobbling not far from me when I got there (got up too late). I set right up and within 45 minutes had this tom come into my fighting purr call and it worked. Now I hope to get my second one with a bow. Good luck Drew, and don't forget to take Brian Dorman with you! Good luck to all turkey hunters. Turkey hunting is the ultimate sport!

Posted by: RS Well Drew, any luck? Excellent to hear Eric is a bow hunter, check out Bowsite.com, go to the Kansas threads, to see some excellent birds that have been shot by resident bowhunters.

Hey Drew...Last weekend I took the shotgun this time instead of a bow. One thing I came across was 2 hunters stalking my gobbler decoy. I quickly said-HEY GUYS. They were shocked that I was sitting only 15 yards from the decoy. Watch your back Drew!
