Signs of Spring in the Middle of Winter.

Even though it is January 12th and we still have over 2 months of winter left, it's never too early to look foreword to spring.  As I started the Braggin' Wall again, I have caught a little cabin fever.  Through the harshest weeks of winter sometimes it seems as if Spring will never come.  However, even now there are some sutler signs of spring.

For starters, the days are getting longer.  This has been happening since the first day of Winter in December, however for the first few weeks the change is extremely slow and almost unnoticeable.  Now that we are getting into the third week of January, we can start to see the change on a daily basis, in-fact we are gaining over 1 minute of daylight each day and that will accelerate over the coming weeks and months.  Here are the sunrise and sunset times for the next week.

Day.......Sunrise.........Sunset
12th.......7:41AM..........5:21PM
13th.......741AM...........5:22PM
14th.......7:41AM..........5:23PM
15th.......7:40AM..........5:24PM
16th.......7:40AM..........5:25PM
17th.......7:40AM..........5:26PM
18th.......7:40AM..........5:27PM
19th.......7:40AM..........5:28PM

Another way we know Spring is on the way is that on January 14th our daily average temperatures will begin to trend up.  From January 8th through the 13th the average high temperature in Topeka is 36 degrees. On January 14th the average high jumps to 37 and increases for the next 6 months. We are still in the middle of winter, so cold blasts are still expected and will happen through much of the fall season, but on average our temperatures go up from here on out.

If you are a fan of cold weather then you will welcome the Arctic Blast that will dive in on Wednesday and into the weekend, but if you like the warm weather just keep it in your mind that on average, we have seen the worst of winter.
