So the final KU basketball domino has dropped. Days after Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur declared for the NBA draft, fellow NCAA champ Mario Chalmers has followed suit. But where will he suit up this fall? The guess here is there's a good chance he could still be in the crimson and blue.
Chalmers, like Arthur, is not going to hire an agent. That allows him to workout for teams, go through the process, and as long as he doesn't like his chances of being a first-round pick (and as long as he pays his way to the team workouts) he can still return for his senior season. Rush can't. Arthur likely will not be back...but Chalmers? I could see him returning. At least a 50-50 chance.
Reasons for him to return: This year's draft is fairly loaded with good players. It looks much stronger than next year's draft for sure. Chalmers, if he avoids injury and plays well, could actually improve his stock, and for that matter, his bank account. Plus, I think Chalmers is on the small side for a 2-guard, but he hasn't spent much time at the point. With Russell Robinson gone, and Sherron Collins more of a combo guard, Chalmers could show scouts he has floor vision and can run a team if he returns.
Reasons for him to go: No matter what he does next year, Chalmers name will never have more recognition than it does right now. The image of him nailing the 3 that put the national title game in overtime is etched everywhere, from Sports Illustrated covers to the minds of millions of fans and NBA executives. Might as well strike while the iron is hot. Plus, many scouts like to see how players show up on the big stage...you can't be more clutch than Chalmers was that Monday night on CBS -- in front of the world.
I suppose Chalmers could get a guarantee in the late first round...heck, Acie Law was drafted last year mainly because of his reputation as a clutch player. Chalmers could do the same.
What do you think? Is "Super Mario" gone for good, or will he be a four-year KU player? Leave a comment and let me know!
