So I had to occasion to watch the mixed martial arts UFC 100 last weekend. Many experts are saying that based on its popularity, it could surpass hockey at the fourth most popular sport in America. And I say, how? Seriously, with the exception of one brutal cheap shot by Dan Henderson, and a great, but vulgar, post-match speech by heavyweight champion Brock Lesner, I found it to be boring. Granted these are great athletes, but I would take a boxing match any day, compared to a boring grappling match, like George St. Pierre's.
Today I see, and read, UFC President Dana White condemning Lesner for his actions. Well guess what Dana, he is the only reason you are getting any buzz today. Stop acting like your sport has all this history, and it's a gentlemen's game. Two guys go into an octogon and try to kill each other, plain and simple. So, if there is some emotion on the mic after, than so be it. I for one, feel like this will always be a part of this sport, which is why it will continue to enjoy great popularity, but will never be truly mainstream.
