After seven weeks of the training schedule given to me by our Bootcamp trainer, Chris Rhoads, the moment of truth came Saturday, November 28th at the Rescue Run through downtown Topeka.
With the blow of a horn, all 500 participants of the 2009 Rescue Run were off, including myself and Melissa Brunner. I only managed to stay by her side for about 10 seconds... she's much too fast for me.
But I had picked up some speed. Seven weeks prior, I ran in the WOW run in Lawrence - a 5K, like the Rescue Run. That race marked the jumping off point to see how much I could improve my time in nearly two months. I ran that 3.1 miles in 30:22.

Seven weeks and nearly 45 training miles later (and did I mention I lost 5 pounds?), I ran the Rescue Run in 27:17. That's 3 minutes off my time; about a minute per mile faster!
Needless to say, I'm pretty happy with the results of the training program. It's amazing what a little exercise 3 or 4 days a week can do for your body. I did slightly injure my foot, so I'm taking it easy until that gets better (don't want to do any permanent damage).
Next goal - conquering a 10K race... and then half-marathon training!
