PEOPLE magazine reported Friday that Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together... despite the fact that he allegedly beat her up three weeks ago.
I've read that battered women tend to stay in abusive relationships, usually for the following reasons:
1. The woman believes that the violence was her fault.
2. The woman has an inability to place the responsibility for the violence elsewhere.
3. The woman fears for her life and/or her children's lives.
4. The woman has an irrational belief that the abuser is omnipresent and omniscient.
It's tough for many of us to understand why a battered person would stay or put themselves back in an abusive relationship. You can't judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes. What we can do is help them. And I hope, if that is the situation with Rihanna and Chris (innocent until proven guilty), that there are people in their lives that will offer the help they need.
The YWCA's got a great organization that is there to help women in that situation - http://www.ywca.org/site/pp.asp?c=c8nKFITNvEoG&b=1069861
