What's Race Got to Do With Mockingbirds?

When you think February 1st this year many of you probably think "Super Bowl!" and maybe "Happy Birthday" (I was with three birthday-celebrators that day!). But it was also the day the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library kicked off the Big Read.

Join your fellow Topekans this February in reading To Kill A Mockingbird. Most of us have read it at least once when we were in school, but it's time for another read-through, and I'm sure you'll get more out of it this time around!

Did you know Harper Lee wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel loosely based on her observations of family and neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown back in 1936? The book deals with racial and social issues in America and gave us a model for integrity - Atticus Finch.

Atticus Finch - Atticus is the unconventional, yet loving and wise father of Scout (the book's narrator) and Jem. An attorney and proponent of racial and social equality, Atticus treats all peope equally, regardless of race or class. He angers the town when he agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man wrongfully accused of rape and assault. http://www.tscpl.org/bigread/section/about_the_book/

Do you know someone like Atticus Finch? If so, a 300 word essay about that person could win you an award from the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. They're picking winners from teen and adult categories. The deadline is Feb. 27.

Submit your entry online or mail it in! http://www.tscpl.org/bigread/section/atticus_finch_essay_contest/

Tell me about your Atticus Finch. Or maybe you know a Boo Radley, a Scout or a Dill! (Click the link to see which character you might be http://www.tscpl.org/bigread/section/about_the_book/
