Moral Courage

We all know the difference between right and wrong, but how many of us have the strength to stand up for what's right when we may be standing alone? That's the premise behind a new book penned by own of Topeka's own Shawnee County detectives. Well, former detective.

His name is Daniel Jaramillo and he retired from the office just last week after 28 years. I met Daniel today and let me tell you, it was an honor. He's got great stories to tell, and he does so in his book, "Fortitude: Without Acknowledgment." Daniel has been part of the "good guy fight" against corruption in the Sheriff's Office during the drug scandal of the '90s, he's run in marathons and trained as a triathlete, taught ethics to incoming law enforcement, and he recently lost his wife of 15 years to breast cancer. He is now a single father raising his 8 year old son, Luke.

Daniel recently turned 50 (but doesn't look a day over 30!) and has an incredible awareness of life and desire to get out and live it. His next goal, he says, is to start training to climb a mountain. Perhaps after he runs the Boston Marathon.

He's one of those people that upon hearing them speak, you remind yourself of your own life goals and know that there's plenty of time to accomplish them but it starts today. How great life can be when you reach that kind of awareness and courage to just live it!
