A line of severe storms slammed Douglas County after 1 o’clock this morning leaving behind damage from Stull to Lawrence.

One week ago I was in Beloit covering storm damage Friday I found myself closer to home on the same beat.

"The wind was just roaring we didn't hear nothing but the wind," Tina McIver recalls from her yard standing in front of a shed with torn shingles.

"Our home was literally swaying form north to south, it was swaying," Vicki Gage said.

In Lawrence that wind ripped off the roof of a lumber yard of 6th street, tore business signs and sent a tree crashing down on a man’s mobile home behind Johnny’s Tavern.

Daylight showed the destruction, a close call for the man inside, "If he had been laying on his bed I don’t think he would have made it, because the tree was on top of it," Next door neighbor Karen Ahmed said.

"God put him in another room working on his computer. If he had been in his bedroom he would have died," Julie Francis said fighting back tears.

Scary for those desperate to find a safe place in their homes, "I got my cushions from my couch and got ready to get in the bathtub," said Francis.

"We don't have a basement so we kind of got under the couches in the living room with the kids and the dog,” McIver said.

A survey team with the National Weather Service continues their tours to determine if the damage caused was by a tornado or straight line winds.
