"People are very susceptible to lightning. It can travel through the ground. It can travel through electrical wiring, plumbing and get inside your home," said Jennifer Stark of the National Weather Service.
That is exactly what happened to Falicity Wishkeno. The lightning struck her home at 1536 NW Valencia Rd. and traveled through the wiring and pipes before reaching and shocking her.
According to the National Weather Service 62 people on average are struck and killed each year by lightning. Hundreds more are injured.
There are several ways to protect yourself in the event of a storm that produces lightning.
One example is the 30 / 30 Rule:
*If you hear thunder less than 30 seconds after you see lightning, go inside.
*Wait 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder before going back outdoors.
When you are inside you will want to follow these tips as well.

*Avoid doing dishes or even washing your hands.
*Don't use the telephone.
