Volunteers gathered with their lawn mowers and trimmers to help the Topeka Cemetery clean up before Memorial Day weekend. The event is an annual project in recognition of the national Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup. They have been cleaning up the cemetery for the last 9 years.
Volunteers also helped to record information from headstones to help the Cemetery verify their records.
The Topeka Cemetery was established in 1859. It is the final resting place for veterans from all eight wars. Charles, Curtis, Vice President of the United States along with five Kansas Governors, and eighteen former mayors, are among those buried at the Topeka Cemetery.
