Each year, as summer turns to fall, men and women who love the outdoors take the time to sharpen their skills by shooting a few rounds of sporting clays.
Justin Corbet lost his life to an auto accident at age 23. So to honor Justin's memory, a foundation has been set up and a sporting clays tournament is held each year.
But what exactly is the Justin Corbet Foundation? "A group of friends asked the family if we could evolve it into a foundation and the foundations primary responsibility is to further the education and safety in the shooting sports field," says the chairperson of the Justin Corbet Foundation, Jerry Marney.
Since the foundation was started in 2006, it has raised over $20,000 and already donated $16,000 in grants to various organizations that sponsor youth and women shooting and educational activities.
Any organization is eligible to apply for a grant. In 2007, the Pass-It-On Outdoor Mentors were given $4,000 to support their great cause.
"We work to recruit mentors in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. We want to find adults that will take time to spend outdoors with a kid. We want to get them out hunting, fishing, shooting, and camping. We've got to many kids today that are spending way too much time indoors."
The 5th annual Justin Corbet Sporting Clays Shoot was a huge success, raising a projected $5,000 to $10,000 that will help ensure the activities that Justin loved will live on. "It's heartwarming. It's a very emotional day for me each year," Justin's mom, Beverly Corbet says. "I'm very appreciative for all the people who attend and help carry out his memory."
"It's nice because Justin loved to shoot and fish. He would have been on your Braggin' Wall if he had a chance," says Ken Corbet. " When you're 23 you're in the middle of your full stride. So we do this and it helps a little bit with fond memories."
