Once a year, one local high school gives their art students the chance to shine.

It's a twenty-year tradition at Topeka West High School, the annual Best of the West Fine Arts Show.

"Football games are heralded and we have pep assemblies, but this is one time the arts gets to shine," says Susie Corbett from Topeka West. She works with the art students on a daily basis.

The show compiles a wide range of works done by students throughout the entire year from two-dimensional, 3-d, graphic design, even photography. "I'll often see them in the halls point at theirs and say 'That's mine, that's mine!' and I love that because they should be proud of what they do," Corbett admits.

"I look at everything and take it in and incorporate that in to me and i put it on paper," says senior Sarah Chavez. For Chavez, being a studio art student meant she earned an entire wall at the show--something she's quite proud of.

"It took me a long time to get to this point but I am and I have more to do but I'm just excited to present this."

Susie Corbett admits it's not just a source of pride for her--but it's a great opportunity for these students.

"One student won a four-year full ride to Washburn University, so that helps pull people in," Corbett says.

But Corbett says she does wish the students got a better head start. "I think it's vital that arts have an elementary school place. We don't have that in 501, but if we did, these kids could be even more advanced."

Regardless---there's no denying talent lines the halls of Topeka West.
