LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ The University of Kansas is seeking a federal court order to ban a Lawrence clothing store from selling unlicensed Jayhawk merchandise.

KU athletic department officials say they want to protect their right to manage, license and benefit from the university's image and its sports teams.

Larry Sinks, owner of the Joe-College.com store, calls the university's lawsuit an attack on his First Amendment rights. He says he's a Kansas taxpayer and has a right to use the state name on a shirt anytime he wants.

Sinks says his shirts don't use the Jayhawk mascot or other university-protected images.

But KU officials say the shirts are close enough to the university's own offerings to confuse customers into thinking they're buying officially licensed apparel.
