WICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Wichita Republican Phil Hermanson is resigning from the Kansas House to focus on his new family.

The Wichita Eagle reports Hermanson made the announcement Thursday, saying he intends to seek public office again sometime in the future.

Hermanson was married in September to Rhonda Riggs, to whom he proposed on the House floor in May. The marriage also brought him three stepchildren.

Hermanson has been in the House since 2009. His district includes parts of south Wichita and Haysville. He refiled his voter registration Thursday for his new address, which is outside the district.

Republican precinct members in the district will choose a replacement to serve the remaining year in Hermanson's term.

News release from House Speaker's Office:
State Representative Phil Hermanson (R-Wichita) on Thursday announced he will step down from his position representing the 98th House District.

Hermanson’s resignation will be effective upon delivery to the Secretary of State’s office. In making the announcement, he thanked the residents of his district and the state of Kansas for trusting him to represent them in the statehouse.

“I have knocked on many doors in the 98th and 96th district and have gained so many friends from my visits,” Hermanson said. “I am truly sad that I will not have the honor of being their representative, but I really want to focus on God, my wife, and family.

Hermanson married Rhonda Riggs in September and recently began a new job with Simon Palmer Properties.

House Speaker Ray Merrick (R-Stilwell) thanked Hermanson for his service and wished him the best in all his future endeavors.

“Phil has been an absolute pleasure to work with in the House. His knowledge was an asset to his colleagues and committees,” Merrick said. “His absence will leave a large hole in our caucus and in the statehouse.”

Hermanson’s first term was in 2009. He currently serves on Financial Institutions, Utilities and Telecommunications, Energy and Environment, and Transportation. He has also been vice-chair of Insurance as well as Special Claims Against the State.
