WIBW-TV Earns Honors From Kansas City Press Club

(WIBW) - 13 News won four gold, two silver and an honorable mention in the Society of Professional Journalists' Heart of America Awards competition.

The awards were presented Saturday by the Kansas City Press Club.

Melissa Brunner and chief photojournalist Doug Brown were honored with two gold awards for her regular Thursday night To Your Health stories. The stories won in the beat reporting and regular franchise feature categories.

Melissa also won a gold award for her blogs on the wibw.com web site.

The WIBW-TV News Team also earned a gold award in spot news for coverage of the December shooting deaths of two Topeka Police officers and the search for their killer.

The station received silver awards in the newscast and feature categories. The feature store was about a Topeka man's lost guitar being found after 15 years.

The station also received an honorable mention for coverage of the break-in and assault at the WIBW-TV studios in May of last year.

The Heart of America Awards competition includes news organizations in Kansas and Missouri.
