FROM TOPEKA POLICE -- The Topeka Police Department is sponsoring Summer Camps for Topeka area children who are going into the 6th, 7th and 8th grade next school year. There are 50 slots available each week of the camp.
There will be three camps that are one week in length and are being held at the Landon Middle School. The first camp is June 6th-June 10th, the second camp is June 20th-June 24th and the third camp is July 25th-July 29th. Camps run from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm each day. The camp is free of charge with lunch being provided each day. The Topeka Police Department is able to sponsor this camp through grant money received from the local Target store.
Topeka Police School Resource Officers (SRO’s) will serve as instructors and team leaders. The first day campers will meet with Chief of Police Ronald Miller. Other activities include an introduction to the Response Team and some of the equipment used. Practical exercises will include simulating an encounter with a suspicious person and how police handle them.
The second day teaches campers about traffic stops and then the campers participate in role play scenarios dealing with misdemeanor traffic stops. There will be a short demonstration on police pursuits and felony traffic stops. Physical activity will end the day with a game of dodge ball between campers and SRO’s.
The third day campers will learn the dangers of texting and driving, driving under the influence and they can participate in the POPAT (Police Officer’s Physical Abilities Test). And on day four, the campers learn about crime scene investigation and evidence collection and then they will participate in processing a simulated crime scene.
The last day will be Law Enforcement Scenario Competitions involving Suspicious Person Stops, Misdemeanor Traffic Stops, Felony Traffic Stops, DUI/Alcohol Stops, Crime Scene Scenarios and then the students will be given police scenarios and be asked to make decisions based on what they have learned. The day ends with an awards ceremony where campers will be recognized for their accomplishments.
