TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-Tens of thousands of kids and adults around the world are united to set a new Guinness World Record
and this is the first time Topeka is splashing in.

The Blaisdell Aquatic Center is where swim instructors and kids are attempting to set the global record for the world's largest swimming lesson. The current Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson stands at 24,873 participants representing 15 countries across the globe and coordinators say they hope this event promotes a deeper message as well.

"It's a day in history. We are breaking new records so yeah!," said 14 year-old participant, Kyler Silver.

"This is happening nation-wide, I keep saying nation but its world- wide, and it's all taking place at the exact same time," said Recreation Program Coordinator for Shawnee County Parks and Recreation, Jennifer Wegener.

Lifeguards say they hope an important lesson swims across children's minds. Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 through 5. Research shows that swimming lessons can reduce drowning by 88%.

"There have been several drownings in the area recently, so we are trying to emphasize again the need to get your children to learn how to swim," said Wegener.

"We have a lot of saves. If we can just educate 10-15, you know, a couple hundred more, people then that will cut down on that save ratio exponentially," said lifeguard and Assistant Manager for Parks and Recreation, Jason Coffman.

Children say they are eager to set the new record. And through all the splash and kicks, they learned what to do if they are ever stuck underwater.

"You learn a bunch of different strokes and how to dive differently and if you need help and if you are having trouble, they teach you a bunch of things to stay up above water," said Silver.

Coordinators said they will find out if they beat the world record on July 1st.
