TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__We all have a plan to deal with emergencies when tragedy strikes our homes. Coinciding with National Be Kind To Animals week, the Helping Hands Humane Society wants to make sure we don't forget about our canine companions or furry felines.

The outdoor warning sirens rang throughout Shawnee County Monday afternoon, a reminder for residents to prepare in case of emergency, but what about the animals many of us hold dear? Michael McNulty of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a plan that he relayed to attendees at Monday's Pet Disaster Preparedness Seminar. "For the safety of our whole family and community its important for us as owners to have a plan, should we need to provide shelter during a storm or evacuate."

Attendees were eager to provide their pets with a plan. Valarie Sesler said, "I would be lost without my dogs. I want to make sure I'm prepared for them should something happen. I live out in the country and that makes it even more important if I need to go looking for them."

here at the seminar, speakers touched on the importance of having 3-7 days worth of food and water for your pet, but also what many owners may not have ready, a "Go-bag."

State Director of the U.S. Humane Society, Midge Grindstead said, "They are critical when you have to leave. You have to make sure it contains what they need. Medication and first aid kits in case they get injured. Most importantly something that keeps them calm. A blanket or a toy or something that keeps them calm and back to normal."

Midge also says to take a picture of your pet without yourself in it. This way authorities can get a full length look at your pet in case they need to find it. Another helpful hint is to document any unique markings or personalities about your pet that would make it easier for rescuers to spot them.
