(WIBW) - Some hopeful news about a young girl whose journey has been followed by many people in northeast Kansas.
Family friends say 12-year-old Madison Taliaferro's family got the call late Sunday night that donor organs were available. Just after 10:30 am Monday, she began undergoing a double lung transplant at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
The procedure was expected to take up to 10 hours. By just before 6 pm, friends reported both new lungs were in and functioning.
Madison is living with cystic fibrosis. She and her mother relocated to St. Louis in August, when Madison was placed on the transplant list.
Donations to help with expenses may be sent to the Madison Taliaferro Lung Transplant Fund, in care of Denison State Bank, 3640 SW Fairlawn Road in Topeka, 66614.
A Facebook group chronicling Madison's story can be found by searching "The Journey of Madison's New Lungs" on Facebook.
