TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Topeka City Councilman will vie for a seat on the Shawnee County Commission.
Chad Manspeaker, who represents the city's 6th District, filed as a Democrat for the commission's District 1 seat.
He was among those filing ahead of Monday's noon deadline for the 2014 election cycle.
Carol Marple and Billy Rork have filed as Republicans for the commission seat. Incumbent Shelly Buhler has until August to submit signatures to get her name on the November ballot as an independent, which is how she has been elected twice previously.
Also of interest on the ballot, Joshua Tucker of Pittsburg will challenge incumbent Lynn Jenkins in the 2nd Congressional District Republican primary. Margie Wakefield is running for the Democrats.
Incumbent U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts faces three GOP challengers in the primary: J.D. Smith of Osawatomie, Alvin Zahnter of Russell and Milton Wolf of Leawood.
State Senator Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha had been considering entering the race as well but did not file.
Shawnee County DA Chad Taylor and Patrick Wiesner of Lawrence are seeking the Democratic nomination.
In addition, 35 of 125 Kansas House seats have candidates unopposed.
