Tons of Weight Lost In Governor's Weight Loss Challenge

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)--More than 22 tons of weight was lost during the Governor's Weight Loss Challenge.

Gov. Sam Brownback, Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer and KDHE Secretary Bob Moser celebrated the more than 5-thousand kansans who participated on Tuesday.

They also recognized first place finishers, 'Wolf Pack' from the Kansas Dept. of Corrections and second place finishers, 'Ft. Scott Finishers' from the Kansas Dept. of Transportation.

“Everyone who completed the weight loss challenge is to be commended, and I’m glad to say that the State of Kansas and local leaders are setting a positive example in the fight against obesity,” said Gov. Brownback. “Congratulations to ‘Wolf Pack’ and ‘Ft. Scott Finishers’ for their tremendous success. Now we all have to commit to upholding these healthy habits.”

For their hard work, the 'Wolf Pack' earned a total of $5,000. They had a total weight loss percentage of 19.02% or 264.5 pounds. The 'Ft. Scott Finishers' earned $2,500 with a total weight loss percentage of 18.98.

David Bruton won $1,000 for losing the highest percentage of individual weight. He was a member of the 'Forestry, Fish and Game' team from Kansas Forest Service.

A drawing was held to award an additional $44,500 in prize money to 37 of the 162 teams that lost a higher percentage of weight than the Governor's team.

The challenge ran for four months. A total of 1,026 teams competed against the Governor's.

$500 winners include Belly Dumpers, Skinny Wannabes, Maximum Deflection, Show me the money and Stressed in the City from the Dept. of Transportation, Muffin Top Droppers, The Phat to Fab Five, and SW LOSERS from the Dept. of Health and Environment, The Muscle Rustlers, CREAM, MISS FITS, Team Sassy by Summer, and Team 3D-Dieting, Divas and Dudes from the Dept. for Children and Families, Fat 5, Caboose Cutters, Driver's 5000, and MisFits from the Dept. of Revenue, Hollywood Stars from the Kansas Lottery, The Marshmallow Resistance, ASAPA, and Getting Healthy and Looking Good! from Dept. of Education, Law and Order-Special Weight Loss Unit and Bums Away from the Attorney General's Office, Thin 2 Win and Not Into It from the Dept. of Transportation, KSD Team Smile from School for the Deaf, L.G. from the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility, The CHASErs from the Judicial Branch, WALKFORCE from Norton Correctional Facility, Shockers Thin It to Win It from Wichita State University, RxTreme Team from Board of Pharmacy, and Fat Losers from Bank Commissioner.

$2,500 winners include 18th Judicial Branch District 2 from the Judicial Branch, Bob's Blobs from the Dept. of Health and Environment, The Resolute from Kansas Water Office and BIG DROPPERS from Kansas Juvenile Corrections.

The $10,000 winner was Water Weight Loss from the Dept. of Health and Environment.

The prize money was donated by Coventry Health Care, UnitedHealth Group and Kansas Beverage Association.
