READING, Kansas -- The City of Reading, Kansas is in the recovery process this week. Restoration of the town will occur slowly, and rumors of bulldozing the entire city are unfounded. Teams are determining the habitability of residences and some residents will be able to return to their homes as soon as the homes pass a safety inspection. Additionally, electricity has been partially restored to the town and Westar anticipates having power restored to certain sections of town by this evening.

At this time Lyon County Community Organization Active in Disasters (COAD) and the United Way are coordinating volunteers to help with cleanup and any other necessary jobs. All unaffiliated volunteers should call the United Way 2-1-1 telephone number. Volunteers will be instructed on needs and when and where to report to help. Volunteers should not report to Reading, but call 211 first.

The 211 number may also be utilized if you wish to donate items to help the residents of Reading. The list is always changing, but 211 will have the most current list. The current needs are:
Plywood sheeting
Bug spray
